Yorkshire Barn Wedding at The Normans

Unposed Wedding Photography

My no-pose approach to wedding photography is heavily focussed on people and the interactions between them. I want to capture emotions, feelings and atmosphere – all the stuff that brings back great memories.

So what you’re about to see are genuine moments that happened naturally during James & Jenny’s wedding. Even the portraits are unposed. Enjoy!

The Normans Wedding Photography

The Normans is a unique, exclusive use, wedding venue in the rural Yorkshire countryside, not far from the city of York itself.

This farm wedding venue has everything you need to have your wedding ceremony and reception all in one place. They even have a two-bedroom cottage if you’d like to get ready there too.

There are a lot of reasons why The Normans makes such a great wedding venue… One of them is that although it’s a pretty big wedding venue (they can seat 120 guests for the ceremony & up-to 180 in the evening) all the different spaces are close together. And each space has a designated function. This means that people don’t get lost, spend all their time propping up the bar away from the dance floor, or wandering off to the loo and getting distracted on the way back.

When choosing a wedding venue, keeping everyone in one place at a time and how people move through the venue is something that can get overlooked, but crowd control is crucial!

Rustic & romantic, chic & contemporary.

As a documentary wedding photographer, it makes no difference to me if your taste is DIY farm wedding or the polar opposite – I’m most interested in the people. However, The Normans do weddings very well. They’ve got a perfect mix of natural materials, twinkling fairy lights and modern design that blend seamlessly. Their attention to detail is spot on and the service they provide is some of the best I’ve seen at the 100+ weddings I’ve photographed. It’s obvious that they really care about their couples and take real pride in the venue.

James & Jenny’s Wedding Day…

I’ve known James for quite a few years now as we have friends in common. So when he got in touch asking if I was available to photograph his wedding I was honoured and very pleased to be able to say yes! But I was yet to meet Jenny, so we all met up at The Normans the day before, had a quick walkthrough of their day and got to know each other.

Jenny spent the night before at her bridesmaid’s house and got ready there in the morning, along with bridesmaids, her flower girl and parents. It was a lovely relaxed morning with definite excitement in the air. Everything went exactly to plan, and once Jenny was in her dress I headed straight to The Normans…

The Ceremony Barn

Jenny and her wedding party waited in the cottage until the last few guests had taken their seats. The Ceremony Barn is gorgeous, a double-height vaulted ceiling, exposed brickwork and a cascade of fairy lights create the perfect romantic atmosphere for a wedding ceremony. After the ceremony, it’s straight out into The Courtyard for drinks, canapes and celebrations!

A Courtyard Celebration

The courtyard is the space that links everything together, a well designed, contemporary space that’s perfect to welcome your guests and celebrate with them afterwards.

So, when I arrived James was hanging out with friends and family before the ceremony. He was a little nervous, but with a beer in hand, he managed to keep them in check. After the ceremony, the team from Hog & Apple were waiting with drinks and a whole host of delicious canapés.

The weather was a little patchy, so we had to duck into The Cow Stalls at one point to hide from the rain. But they’re so stylish, it would have been a shame not to use them.

Speeches & Wedding Breakfast in the Grain Store

The Grain Store is an impressive room. Its tented ceiling along with the fairy lights create instant wow factor.

Great speeches all round got everyone warmed up and ready for a relaxed family-style wedding breakfast. I’m a big fan of informal dining at a wedding, everyone can relax, have a drink and get to know people, all while enjoying some delicious food. Long tables and sharing platters are ideal for this. Plus, The Grain Store has plenty of space for dining, bar & dance floor! This means there is no need to kick your guests out while the room gets turned around – another great thing about this venue.

After the speeches, the weather brightened up a bit so James & Jenny snuck off for a few minutes to catch up on the day so far – obviously, I followed with the cameras 😉

The Collective & DJ Boon at The Normans

The Collective put on a great show, got the crowd involved and kept the dancefloor jumping. Once they finished DJ Boon aka Grant Saker took over with his DJ set to bring the night to an awesome finish. Photobooth props found their way to the dancefloor, ties were tied around heads, shots were drank and a good night was had by all!
