There’s a lot more to taking a great photo than just having a great camera. Sure it helps, but as every photographer worth listening to will tell you, a camera is just a tool. It takes vision, understanding and skill to create a photograph that is more than just pixels. \u00a0Each professional will have their own style and see things in their own unique way. \u00a0My style<\/a>\u00a0is very natural. \u00a0I take a documentary approach to wedding photography, preferring to document the day without interrupting it. \u00a0Fortunately, everyone is different and there is no right way to photograph a wedding. \u00a0But this vision and approach is one of the things that\u00a0sets professionals apart from non-professionals.<\/p>\n

Technology is fantastic. Not only can cameras now create images in situations that would have been almost impossible just a few decades ago, but now those images can be shared with millions of people in seconds. However, just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.<\/p>\n

There was an article published in Vogue early this year, stating that hiring a professional photographer to photograph your wedding “made sense back in the olden days, pre-Facebook albums and Instagram<\/em>“. They go on to suggest you “scatter some disposable cameras around the party and let your drunken guests go to town<\/em>“. I’m not sure about your friends, but if you gave any of my mates disposable cameras after a beer or two… Well let’s just say you wouldn’t want to be the one collecting the prints.<\/p>\n

Also, did Vogue, really just suggest that you trust your guests to take your wedding photography on disposable cameras? Seriously? Anyway, this isn’t about that article.<\/p>\n

Being a professional is about consistency. Being able to produce images of a high standard consistently throughout your wedding is what a professional will do. Not just a lucky one or two snaps of you standing still and smiling, but while you’re on the move and in all different lighting conditions – when you’re expecting a photo to be taken and when you’re not. And a professional photographer will be able to produce images of exceptional quality day in, day out, year on year.<\/p>\n

I’ve used scissors plenty of times before, in fact I’ve been using scissors since I was a little kid. But you wouldn’t trust me to cut your hair. As I said, just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.<\/p>\n

When you hire a professional for any job, trust plays a big role. When you trust someone, you can relax. And when you relax you can have a lot of fun. For me that’s what weddings and wedding photography is all about. It’s about you two celebrating your love and having the best day of your life – with your closest family and friends. Hire a professional wedding photographer and relax.<\/p>\n

I know it can be hard to relax when planning such an important event but it’s much easier if you trust the people you hire. You’re very unlikely to spend that much money on one day in your life ever again. You’re very unlikely to have that many of your friends and family in one place ever again. Hopefully, you’re very unlikely to ever get married again… Yikes. This is a true once in a lifetime event. What if something goes wrong? This could be an article in itself, (in fact it probably will be) but for now I’ll just say that a professional will know what to do in unexpected circumstances. They have experience that amateurs, or hobbyists don’t and they minimise as much risk as possible.<\/p>\n

“Buy cheap, buy twice”, is a phrase that I use often – although mostly to justify buying something better (and more expensive) than I really need. It is sound advice if you’re buying a fridge or a hoover though. It doesn’t really work for once in a lifetime events.<\/p>\n

There was a poll in New York Magazine that stated “21% of brides wished they had spent more on their wedding photography.<\/em>” The photography will outlast your cake, flowers, champagne and just about everything else from your wedding. In fact, it’s the photography that will help to keep the memories of all those perishable purchases alive.<\/p>\n

You invest so much of yourself into planning, choosing and creating such a beautiful day. My wife & I pretty much dedicated a year of our lives to planning our wedding. Everywhere we went we’d see ideas for our wedding. We’d photograph menus when out for dinner, we’d screenshot design blogs for inspiration. If you’re pouring so much of yourself into your wedding, why wouldn’t you invest in a professional photographer? Even ignoring the meaning & feelings of your day, surely you’d want the results of months of hard work to look as beautiful as possible?<\/p>\n

And given how much time and effort you’ve invested, you’d want someone to treat those images with respect, care and attention. That means, choosing a specialist wedding photographer. Someone who carefully selects each image, as your florist carefully selects each stem. Someone who pays attention to the details of each image just as your dressmaker pays attention to each stitch. After all, your wedding photos will last longer than just about any other purchase you’ll make.<\/p>\n

Wedding photography is so much more than a purchase – it’s an investment. At first it might seem a bit odd to call photography an investment, but the more you think about it, the more it makes sense. An investment is something that increases in value with time. That’s exactly what your wedding photos will do.<\/p>\n

It’s a flaw in the human brain that memories fade. Imagine just for a paragraph or two that cameras don’t exist. Never have. Never will. You only have your memory. Now imagine you got married yesterday. Tell me all about it? You can tell me every detail, how your flowers smelt, what you thought as you saw yourself in your dress for the first time, the look on your partners face the first time they saw you…<\/p>\n

Now imagine you got married a year ago, and now 5 years ago, or 10 years ago. It’s sad, but your memories would be completely different and much less vivid. But photography has the power to help keep those memories alive. And the more time that passes between your wedding and the current day, the more valuable those memories become. Photography also gives you the opportunity to re-live those memories with loved ones. Whether that’s your partner on an anniversary or your child on their wedding day, it’s a powerful gift.<\/p>\n
